An American Hero's once-forgotten gravesite Inspires a Veteran Grave Adoption Program Aimed at ensuring all of our Veterans are Honored and Remembered for Future Generations
"I read a quote from a local newspaper reporter who said, 'the responsibility of caring for our veteran's graves falls to the families,' and I cursed it. Not because it was wrong, but because it was reality. Unless our veterans are buried at Arlington, Margraten, cemetery, when the veteran's family passes away the veteran's grave becomes forgotten, neglected and in some cases disappears as in the case of S/Sgt Will Yorkshires.
WHY is it important to remember our veterans and honor their graves?
Because the graves remind us not only of the incredible price of their sacrifice, but that Liberty and human rights are ideals made reality by those who value them so greatly as to die for them. And many DID die; And if it wasn't for their sacrifice defending the sanctity of our humanity, we would be subjects of oppression.
In the Netherlands the Americans who died liberating the Dutch are revered; Generations of children are named in honor of their American liberators and the waiting list to adopt an American's grave was officially suspended in 2022 with over 1,000 families waiting.(pictured: American Cemetery at Margraten).
Yet many Americans repatriated to their hometowns after the war are now becoming forgotten and their graves neglected. This is unacceptable; If our SOCIETY is free because of our fallen veterans' heroism and sacrifice then we have an OBLIGATION and duty to remember them, honor their graves, and remember their families who also bore the cost of their sacrifice. Its an obligation to Liberty itself" - Jim Dicus
